Project Description
PipeTech, a Downer business, is experienced in performing various concrete repairs to rehabilitate stormwater culverts.
We specialise in structural rehabilitation of essential pipeline infrastructure for roads, rail and bridges.
The issue
Stormwater culverts on the Aurizon Network near Middlemount in Queensland have been experiencing deterioration, leading to concerns about their capacity and structural integrity.
Given the locations beneath rail track, any rehabilitation work needed to be executed with precision to avoid impacting transport services and local residents.
The solution
PipeTech was engaged to provide a rehabilitation solution of the existing stormwater culvert to extend its operational lifespan, with minimal disruption to rail services and local traffic during the rehabilitation process.
An assessment of cracked concrete was undertaken to evaluate the influence of cracks on the loadbearing capacity, serviceability and durability of the members.
This includes inspection and recording of cracks, delamination, honeycombing and poor construction joints which may affect repairs. The assessment also identifies the cause of the cracks, and record the crack widths, moisture condition and whether a crack is active or inactive.
Based on the outcome of the assessment, the extent of concrete repair and crack repair works are able to be determined and agreed with Aurizon before proceeding.
The concrete repair works were timed to be carried out during a track closure, with any works not completed in the closure to be delayed and carried out during the next available closure.
The outcome
PipeTech delivered a successful rehabilitation of the degraded stormwater culvert within the planned timeframe and budget, with zero interruption to rail services and local traffic during the works.
